He was special assistant and press secretary to Vermont Gov. Madeleine Kunin and spent 12 years as a journalist, including five years as a foreign affairs reporter with syndicated columnist Jack Anderson in Washington, D.C.
He grew up in Rhode Island and studied journalism at the University of Rhode Island.
